Brits 2000...

Whitney Houston has received a nomination for Best International Female Artist for the Brits 2000 awards.  Other contenders for the award are Macy Gray, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Mary J Blige.

Whitney has been nominated for Best International Artists/Female five times now.   She has one Brit award to her name - Best Soundtrack for 'The Bodyguard'.

You can check out all the nominations on the Brits 2000 Website.  The awards will be handed at the Earls Court Arena in London on 3 March 2000.

Queen Of The Night...

Although remixed when commercially released in the UK, the video for 'Queen Of The Night' is faithful to the original in design and concept.  The song became a US Club/Dance No.1 hit in it's C J Mackintosh incarnation but was only issued to radio in the States.

The video is presented here in RealVideo format - it's one of Whitney's fastest moving videos so capturing it in RealVideo format leaves a less than perfect image but it's good for conveying the concept.  (RealVideo 788KB, 3:04mins).

Dutch Charts...

On the Dutch Top 40 'I Learned From The Best' is a non-mover at No.34. On the Dutch Top 100 the single drops 6 places to No.30.

The album 'My Love Is Your Love'  climbs 3 places No.41 (59th week).

I Believe In You And Me...

She sits between two burning torches in the middle of a large stage floor area and performs live on UK television for the first time in over five years.  Whitney's return brought this stunning live performance of 'I Believe In You And Me'.  Already a very popular Audio Download from Classic Whitney for well over a year, you can now see this performance in all it's colours.   (RealVideo 1.1MB, 4:01mins).

Thank you to everyone who has taken this highly successful video journey with me and for the great feedback.  There is more to come, but all in good time - Manish.

UK Airplay...

'I Learned From The Best' is down on the UK airplay chart and on it's way out as it drops to No.44 (from No.34) on it's 11th week.   Spins drop by 12% to 609 and it's audience drops by 42% to 16.67m.

Greatest Hits...

Although conflicting with Arista USA's recent statement about the issue of the Greatest Hits in April, Music Week once again lists the album's release for the UK as 6 March.

UK Airplay 1999...

Here's some more information about Whitney's airplay last year in the UK:

'My Love Is Your Love' was ranked in 11th place for the year.  It received 33,735,000 plays and an audience impression of 1,106,685,000 (one of 15 tracks to receive a UK audience impression of one billion impressions).

'It's Not Right But It's Okay' ranked 23rd in 1999 and received 27,353,000 spins with 914,440,000 audience impressions.

Music Week spotlights Arista UK.  Of Whitney Houston, the article reads:

Arista had four tracks in the Top 25, tasting success with two songs by Whitney Houston - My Love Is Your Love (at number 11) and It's Not Right But It's Okay (23) - and two from TLC - No Scrubs (10) and Unpretty (14).   "These tracks came from two phenomenal albums and there is no doubting the quality of the music," says [Alex] Crass [head of radio].  "But when the Whitney album [My Love Is Your Love] came out at the end of 1998 there was a fear she would be purely a Radio Two artist.  We had to get  Radio One on board early, and we did it by servicing the album track If I Told You That to them before the record was released.

I Will Always Love You...

As one of the most vocally rich performances of 'I Will Always Love You', Whitney's performance at the 1993 World Music Awards had her deliver what everyone expected of her and just that bit more.  During that era, Whitney stated that the song had to be performed just so in order to make sense of the movie and the concept of the song and it's message.  An under-rated but exceptional classic Whitney performance.  RealVideo, 1.21MB, 4:40mins.

Vivian Carter...

Houston Has Eye On Vivian Carter TeleFlick

LOS ANGELES (UltimateTV.com) - Whitney Houston's Brown House Entertainment is looking to develop a new telefilm based on the life of Vee-Jay record label founder, Vivian Carter.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the movie is tentatively titled either "The Vivian Carter Story" or "Nothing Can Stop Me Now" --named after a Gene Chandler song. The movie will air on Lifetime.

Carter and her husband James Bracken took out a pawn-shop loan to start the Vee-Jay label in 1953, which went on to great success, signing artists such as Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, John Lee Hooker and little-known (at the time) British pop group the Beatles, who later left Vee-Jay for Capitol Records.

I Have Nothing...

Whitney collected no less that ten Billboard Music Awards in 1993 for her unmatched success with 'The Bodyguard' soundtrack and the singles generated from that project.  That evening, she performed a majestic rendition of 'I Have Nothing'.  It stands up as one of the vocally exceptional televised performances of Whitney's career and Classic Whitney is proud to present it to Whitney's fans via RealVideo (1.48MB, 5:54mins).

Porgy, And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going, I Have Nothing...

Arguably the finest performance of Whitney's career came in 1994 at the American Music Awards.  Having collected seven awards and the Award of Merit, Whitney became one of the last artists allowed to perform on both the Grammys and the American Music Awards.  This AMA performance is close to ten minutes long and has been a very popular audio download on the website for over a year.  Now, for the first time - and especially for the many non-US based fans who don't get to see the AMAs, Classic Whitney presents Whitney Houston's breathtaking RealVideo performance of 'Porgy / And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going / I Have Nothing' [2.5MB, 9:54mins]

Hawaii...

The world's media have focused on a story reported at the beginning of the week by the The Tribune-Herald of Hilo, Hawaii.  The story has not been commented on by official sources as yet and no statement has been made by Whitney Houston.

Much of the media have erroneously published reports which conflict with the original Associated Press and Tribune-Herald report and also conflict with Whitney's own schedule.  Below, I have outlined the basic allegation and cited a few facts confirming Whitney's schedule has so far not been affected:

Security officials at the Keahole-Kona International Airport in Hawaii allegedly found a half-ounce of marijuana in one of Whitney's bags in a routine check before boarding an 11 January 2000 flight to San Francisco.

Whitney's bag was retained by security officials at the airport. She and Bobby Brown are reported to have boarded their plane without waiting for the police who the security officials at the airport had called.  Airport security in Hawaii do not have the power to detain persons.  The San Francisco bound flight took off 45 minutes before police are reported to have arrived.  Whitney Houston was not detained, arrested or charged for any crime.  The Authorities in Hawaii are not expected to pursue this issue.

Whitney performed at New York's Radio City Music Hall Saturday night - 16 January 2000 - to sing "God Bless America" before Roy Jones Jr.'s nationally televised boxing match.  Reports from fans who saw the performance confirm Whitney was in good spirits and excellent voice.

The report broke to press six days after the fact on the US national holiday, Martin Luther King Day, also the night of the American Music Awards.   Whitney Houston was not scheduled to appear at these awards contrary to some reports.

No comment about these allegation has been made as yet by Whitney Houston, Nippy Inc. or Arista Records.  As soon as there is a statement, it will appear on Classic Whitney.

Whitney is currently in Europe for the French NJR Awards which are broadcast live on TF1 on Saturday 22 January 2000.

Lover Man, My Man, All The Man That I Need...

The 1991 Billboard Music Awards performance of  'Lover Man / My Man / All The Man That I Need'  was, quite possibly, the defining moment in which Whitney's status as 'the real McCoy' was cemented.  The performance served notice to Whitney's watching peers and her detractors alike of her timeless voice and artistry.  A truly Classic Whitney moment. (1.6MB, 6:24mins).

Ebony...

Whitney is featured in Ebony February 2000 issue.  The story is covers favorite love songs of celebrities:

Maybe it triggers that special moment when you asked your spouse to marry you. Maybe it reminds you of your first high school romance. Or could it be the song the two of you hum or pan-tomime or sing along when it comes on the radio? We all have our favorite love songs and often they trigger a special moment or memory that brings a smile to the face and warmth to the heart. In keeping with the romantic spirit that makes February a special month for lovers, we asked celebrities to share with us their favorite love song, that is to say, the favorite love song they didn't write or record. Several of those featured here say they love a particular song because of the lyrics while others were inspired by a romantic memory invoked, What is your favorite love song, and why? Here is what some of your favorite celebrities had to say.

Whitney's favorite song is I'm Coming Back by Lalah Hathaway, she says  that's the song Bobby played for me when we first met and were dating.

Faith Evans say I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston is her favorite love song because people can really relate to that song because it has a lot of depth and intensity when it talks about love.

Monica say I will Always Love you by Whitney Houston is her favorite love song she say 'I love it so much because it's universal.'

Back In The Day Part 3...

In part to promote her sold out UK shows for 1988's 'Moment Of Truth Tour' (which included nine nights at London's Wembley Arena), Whitney Houston was interviewed by now defunct music show, Rapido.  The interview focused - for the first time on UK television - the importance of Gospel music to Whitney and how she relates it back to the pop music he was recording at the time.  The interview also included some great footage of Cissy Houston singing at the New Hope Baptist Church.

This segment is a great way of showing Whitney's newer, younger fanbase of Whitney's dedication to Gospel long before 'The Preacher's Wife' - i.e. It's not a passing phase.

Whitney Houston - Brits 1987 Performance

In February 1987, Whitney Houston made her first ever UK Brit Awards appearance
when she was nominated for Best International Artist - she didn't collect that night losing to Paul Simon following his success with 'Graceland'.  The following year, The Brits finally introduced a separate International Male & Female artist award.

Whitney did perform that night though and for the first time, you can see this great live vocal performance of 'How Will I Know' on RealVideo.  Click on the above animated screen capture of the performance to download the full 1.1MB (4:25min) performance.

Feedback Welcome!

AMA...

Good Luck to Whitney from all her fans tonight as she's nominated for three American Music Awards:

Arista's Record Earnings...

Arista Posts Best 6-Month Sales Ever, Over $300 Million; Includes Best Quarter Ever, Over $210 Million, and Two Biggest Sales Months in History.

Success Is Underscored by 45 Grammy Nominations Last Week, Led by Santana, Whitney Houston, TLC, Sarah McLachlan, and Barry Manilow.

NEW YORK, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Following news of Arista's record-breaking tally of 45 Grammy nominations last week -- as Santana made headlines around the world with 11 nominations and Clive Davis (himself nominated for three awards as producer with Carlos Santana and Whitney Houston) was named recipient of Grammy's prestigious Trustees Award -- comes the announcement that Arista finished calendar year 1999 with the biggest six month sales in the company's 25-year history, over $300 million, incorporating the biggest quarter ever, over $210 million in billing for the three-month period ending December 31.

This extraordinary figure encompasses the single biggest sales month in Arista history, November, accounting for $85 million in business, nearly $20 million more than the label's second biggest sales month ever, which occurred the following month in December, with $66 million.

"We are thrilled with the performance that Arista has achieved over the last 12 months," says Charles Goldstuck, Executive Vice President & General Manager, Arista Records, "and have a great upcoming release schedule."

An important share of this success goes to Santana, the story of 1999, whose Supernatural album (their first #1 album since 1971) reached 6-times platinum in less than six months. It was bolstered by "Smooth," co-written by and featuring Rob Thomas of matchbox 20, not only the first #1 single of Santana's career, but Soundscan's longest-running #1 pop single of the year at 12 consecutive weeks.

Also contributing to Arista's outstanding results for the past quarter (and for 1999 in general) were 7-time Grammy nominee Whitney Houston. My Love Is Your Love, her first non-soundtrack related studio album in eight years, is certified double-platinum in the U.S. with international sales in excess of 8 million copies. The album contains four pop/R&B crossover hits: "It's Not Right, But It's Okay," the title-tune single "My Love Is Your Love," "Heartbreak Hotel," and Whitney's historic duet with Mariah Carey on "When You Believe" (from The Prince Of Egypt).

8-time Grammy nominee LaFace/Arista recording group TLC had the honor of being the label's first success story of 1999. Their long-awaited third album Fanmail, released in February, was recently certified 5-times platinum. The first single, "No Scrubs," an RIAA gold #1 pop/R&B hit, boasted the largest radio audience for any new single in history. The second single, "Unpretty," also gold, was a top of the chart hit as well.

3-time Grammy nominee Sarah McLachlan released the first live solo album of her career, Mirrorball, which stands at double-platinum. Its top 15 pop hit, "I Will Remember You," has the distinction of being the only live song on Billboard's year-end list of the top Hot 100 singles of 1999.

1999 also saw back-to-back new albums by Kenny G: Classics In the Key Of G (released in June) spent more than 20 weeks at #1 on the Contemporary Jazz chart and was certified gold; Faith -- A Holiday Album (released in November) ended the year at #1 on the seasonal Top Christmas Albums chart, the long-awaited follow-up to 1994's 8x-platinum Miracles -- The Holiday Album, the biggest-selling seasonal album in history.

Newcomers LFO courted the teen market with their #1 Soundscan single, "Summer Girls," which turned into platinum for their self-titled debut album. Clive Davis and Arista made recording history with the signing of The Artist, who released Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, one of the most critically acclaimed albums of his career, featuring the top 20 R&B hit, "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold." The Eurythmics, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, also returned to the front lines with Peace, their first album in ten years, which yielded the #1 Dance single, "Seventeen Again."

Among the artists introduced on Arista in 1999 was the 14-year-old guitar sensation from Minneapolis, Shannon Curfman, who arrived with Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions. On the other side of the spectrum, veteran '80s/'90s R&B singer Angie Stone wound up on every major critic's top 10 list for the year on the basis of her riveting debut solo album Black Diamond, featuring the top 20 R&B hit "No More Rain (In This Cloud)."

Soulshock & Karlin...

LOS ANGELES--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Jan. 6, 2000--Announced this week, the
2000 Grammy Award nominations recognized Whitney Houston's "Heartbreak Hotel"
for two awards: best R&B performance by a duo or vocalist and best R&B song.

The production team responsible for the No. 1 "Heartbreak Hotel" is none other than Soulshock & Karlin, who have also produced hits such as Monica's "Before You Walk Out of My Life," Toni Braxton's "I Love Me Some Him," 2Pac's "Do For Love" and the latest single from 702, "You Don't Know."

In addition, Soulshock & Karlin produced songs on two of the albums nominated for best R&B album: Whitney Houston's "My Love Is Your Love" ("Heartbreak Hotel") and Mary J. Blige's "Mary" ("Memories").

Originally from Denmark, Soulshock & Karlin have been a vital force in the American R&B scene since the early '90s. With remixes for artists ranging from Eric B & Rakim and the Jungle Brothers to Madonna and Brandy, Soulshock & Karlin quickly became one of the major production teams in the industry.

This latest Grammy nomination is the third for Soulshock & Karlin who received previous nominations for their productions on Patti LaBelle's "Alright Now" and Queen Latifah's "Fly Girl."

Soulshock & Karlin recently completed production on "Memories" from Mary J. Blige, "Give You What You Want" from Chico DeBarge and "Still in My Heart" by Tracie Spencer, whose entire album was produced by the duo.

Soulshock & Karlin are currently putting the finishing touches on their girl group H.E.A.T., who will debut in 2000 on Columbia Records. They are also in the studio with their female rapper, Latrice, and preparing to record with Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston's Group Sunday and Destiny's Child.

United Airlines...

[Salient Points Of Text On The Classic Whitney Bulletin Board By Blackatlantic]

United Airlines is treating passengers to music from My Love Is Your Love and Diva's Live 99 on one of their in-flight channels. Both albums play in their entirety on the selected channel. Pretty savvy marketing - kudos to Arista for taking advantage of this airborne promotional tool during a peak holiday travel season.

Snippets of an interview with Whitney are interspersed between the album tracks. presumably, the interview was done specifically for this promotional sample.

Most of the comments from Whitney are new.  Here are some of the more interesting tidbdits that she shared.

1 - Mary J. Blige's 'All That I Can Say' almost ended up on My Love Is Your Love. Lauryn Hill originally proposed the song for Whitney's album. But Whitney passed on the song, and suggested that Hill produce 'I Was Made To Love Him' instead. Whitney declares that she liked 'All That I Can Say', but decided she didn't have enough time to do it justice on the breakneck recording schedule for the album. She called Hill, sketched out the vocal arrangement for 'I Was Made To Love Him' over the phone, and then spent a mere five hours in the studio recording it.

2 - Whitney recalls that she met Hill when the hip-hop queen was only 15 and had not yet recorded with the Fugees. Hill occasionally would attend New Hope Baptist Church where Whitney has been a member since her youth. When Whitney heard that Hill was planning to record with the Fugees, she called the young singer to encourage her to record her own solo album. She told Hill, "You have a beautiful voice that can inspire people; you should record your own album." Whitney reports that even at that young age Hill had a good vision of what she wanted to do with her career--make meaningful music. The golden-voiced diva approves.

3 - She also notes that she and Lauryn bonded over their shared experience of as working mothers.

4 - Whitney reveals that she enjoys message-laden rap. She named Redman, Naughty By Nature, Nas, and the Fugees as some of her favourite rap acts.

5 - She calls My Love Is Your Love her "hip-hop album." But she is quick to add that the music on the album is "hip-hop with class."

6 - Whitney also reports that she had some reservations about performing some of the songs from My Love Is Your Love (i.e. In My Business) in concert. In her view, many of the songs on the album rely heavily on a recorded groove, which she worried would not translate to the stage. As she explained, she prefers to stretch out her songs for live performances to allow room for her out-sized voice. Nevertheless, she says she got past her reservations when she realised that songs like In My Business could be delivered live by focusing on the character and drama of the music.

7 - Yet again she singled out gospel as her favourite musical genre. As she eloquently put it, "Gospel gives me my highest sense of inspiration as a singer. It is my favourite music."

[Many Thanks Blackatlantic]

Dance Traxx/Greatest Hits Info...

[This very interesting article/interview from Billboard's Dance Traxx column also includes the first drop of information about the format of the upcoming Greatest HIts compilation]

DANCE TRAX: Arista's Whitney Houston Gives Her 'Best' To Clubland (Billboard
- 1060 words - January 08, 2000) BY MICHAEL PAOLETTA

SHE'S EVERY WOMAN: From day one, Whitney Houston has brazenly courted the club community, whether in the form of club-ready album tracks (1987's "Love Will Save The Day" and 1992's "I'm Every Woman," to name but two) or wicked remixes ("It's Not Right But It's Okay," "Heartbreak Hotel," and "My Love Is Your Love") from her latest album, 1998's multi-platinum "My Love Is Your Love."

Last year, the Arista artist further enhanced her club profile by making a special appearance at Heritage of Pride's 13th annual Lesbian and Gay Pride Dance on the Pier in New York, where she performed the uptempo versions of "Heartbreak" and "It's Not Right" (Dance Trax, Billboard, July 10, 1999). Houston then proceeded to perform these versions throughout her sold-out European tour.

Like other beat-savvy sisters-in-song who came to prominence in the '80s (Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Mariah Carey come quickly to mind)-and unlike many others who only embrace the genre (and only via remixes) when it becomes a matter of economics (i.e., lackluster album sales)-Houston has never treated the club community like an unwanted child. Quite the opposite, really. Perhaps it's because she fondly recalls a time when her mother (Cissy Houston) recorded disco-era anthems like "Think It Over" and "Warning-Danger (This Love Affair May Be Hazardous To You)."

"Clubs have been around forever, clubs are always where it's happening," acknowledged Houston during a holiday chat with Dance Trax. "People like to get their shit off. And clubs offer a great environment for that.

"Additionally," says Houston, "clubs are a breeding ground for musical trends. They're where you'll always hear the most cutting-edge music, and that's very important for me as an artist."

That said, you'd best prepare yourself for single No. 4 from Houston's "My Love Is Your Love." For the Diane Warren-penned "I Learned From The Best," Houston gets deftly worked over by HQ2 (the duo of Hex Hector and Mac Quayle) and Junior Vasquez.

In the hands of HQ2, the song is infused with a cool, mysterious orchestral vibe that gives the track a sly James Bond-like feel, while simultaneously upping the drama quotient. Speaking of drama, Vasquez surrounds Houston's table-turning words with galloping beats and ambient breakdowns.

"I like when my remixes surprise my fans," enthuses Houston. "I think it's exciting to see this pop princess embrace dance music and create music that's on the edge. I know me and what I like. With the remixes, the world can experience me in all my various colors."

Furthermore, she notes, "the remixes give people other options and show that I can do more than one form of music. I don't ever want to be locked into one groove. For [the album] "My Love Is Your Love,' the original versions have such bad grooves, which made the record. That's the vibe I wanted for the album. But I always knew the remixes would come later. The remix is usually what creates the anthem. Will I include dance songs on upcoming albums? Of course, it's all about timing.

"You know, when I performed at the gay and lesbian pride dance, the people absolutely loved it," she says. "All year long, they hear this music in the clubs, but did they expect me to come and sing the versions they know and love? It was such a great surprise for them. It was my way of showing my love, respect, and appreciation to all my fans."

Arista mailed a promotional 12-inch of "I Learned From The Best" containing the HQ2 mixes to club DJs on Dec. 20; this will be followed on Jan. 11 by a promo-only 12-inch that features the Vasquez versions. According to the label, a commercial street date is forthcoming.

Also forthcoming is a two-disc greatest-hits set from Houston, tentatively scheduled for release March 7. Sources at the label say that one disc will concentrate on the singer's ballads and downtempo material, while the other will spotlight her dancefloor jams.

AMA Poll...

A poll being conducted on the 1999 American Music Awards Website.   It's basically a poll where you vote for your favorite artist of each of the decades (that they debuted in) and Whitney is listed in the 1980s against Michael Jackson, Madonna, etc.  The main reason to vote in this poll is that the winners will be announced on the Television Telecast on ABC January 17th, 2000.

World Exclusive: Sweet Thing...

During a 1991 rehearsal for Saturday Night Live, Whitney Houston and her band performed the Chaka Khan classic, 'Sweet Thing'.   The song was not performed on the show itself but a recording of it was made.  It was later recorded by Mary J Blige for her 1992 CD, 'What's The 411?'' and Chaka's orginal reappeared on the 1998 'New York Under Cover' soundtrack.

Now, for the very first time ~and in the spirit of sharing~ Classic Whitney brings this most remarkable performance to Whitney's fans.

You Will Be Blown Away.

[Special Thanks Monte]
