Whitney, Denzel Best BET Awards
by Josh Grossberg
Jun 20, 2001, 10:00 AM PT

Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington were the best bets--make that BETs--Tuesday in Las Vegas.  The superstars were among the top winners at the inaugural Black Entertainment Television Awards, honoring the best of African-American pop culture.

An MIA Washington scored a Best Actor trophy for his role as the coach of a Virginia high school's first integrated football team in Remember the Titans, while Houston nabbed BET's Lifetime Achievement Award, giving props to both her chart-busting music and film careers.

Billed as the event where "black star power explodes," the first BET Awards covered film, music and sports and were chosen by a committee of industry executives, journalists and fans. The two-hour kudofest was broadcast live from the Vegas strip on the BET cable network.

Other big winners included hip-hop duo OutKast, which took home trophies for Best Male Group and Best Video ("Ms. Jackson"); Destiny's Child, which picked up the award for Female Group; and St. Louis-based hip-hopster Nelly, who was named Best New Artist.

BET's Viewer's Choice Award, voted on by Netizens, went to Lil' Bow Wow for his hit, "What's My Name."

In what might be considered an upset, Philadelphia 76ers star Allen Iverson beat out the Los Angeles Lakers' Shaquille O'Neal for Best Male Athlete, despite the Lakers' relatively easy win over the 76ers in last week's NBA Finals.

Undoubtedly, though, the night belonged to Houston, who was welcomed with a standing ovation after receiving an all-star tribute from diva-in-waiting Christina Aguilera and R&B crooner Luther Vandross.  After the six-time Grammy winner performed two of her songs, her mother, Cissy Houston, and young daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, came onstage to present the singer with the Lifetime Achievement Honor.   "God has blessed her with a glorious talent that will never be forgotten," Cissy Houston told the crowd.

"I'm every woman! I'm a survivor...the best is yet to come," a joyous Houston shouted as she accepted the award.

Other performers included rappers Jay-Z and Eve (who nabbed Male and Female Hip-Hop Awards, respectively), Snoop Dogg, Usher, Sisqó, Lil' Bow Wow, OutKast, Destiny's Child and Patti LaBelle.   The show was hosted by the "Original Kings of Comedy" Steve Harvey and Cedric "The Entertainer."

Here's a complete rundown of the winners at the first BET Awards:

Lifetime Achievement: Whitney Houston.
Male Group: OutKast
Female Group: Destiny's Child
Male R&B artist: Musiq Soulchild
Female R&B Artist: Mary J. Blige
Male Hip-Hop Artist: Jay Z
Female Hip-Hop Artist: Eve
New Artist: Nelly
Gospel Artist: Donnie McClurkin
Video of the Year: OutKast, "Ms. Jackson"'

Bet News...

Whitney Houston featured in a short segment on BET news after the awards ceremony and spoke of her win.  She said of the event: "It just really hit me that I am the first recipient of a Lifetime Achievement of BET. That is so special I can't even begin to tell you, the words won't explain how I really feel about that. It is from my own people. That love me. That support me. No matter what they hear or what they THINK they know.  They have always been in my corner."

Washington and Whitney honoured at black awards

Denzel Washington won the Best Actor award for Remember the Titans and Whitney Houston received a Lifetime Achievement award during the first US Black Entertainment Television Awards, presented yesterday in Las Vegas. Best Actress honours went to Sanaa Lathan for Love & Basketball.

Film director Steven Spielberg has paid tribute to Stanley Kubrick, describing his new movie A.I. as a collaboration with the late director. Spielberg said he had: "Worked hard to achieve a cinematic collaboration by bringing a vision of Stanley Kubrick's to the screen." The story of the film, which was first conceived by Kubrick more than 20 years ago, was picked up by Spielberg after he died in March 1999.

Charmain Carr, the actress who rose to fame as Liesl von Trapp in the Sound of Music, has revealed that none of the other von Trapp kids actually sang in the legendary musical. The 57-year-old, who shone as the girl who was "16 going on 17", said: "None of the other kids could sing. The producers had to get child singers to sing the actual songs because the children couldn't do it. When there were scenes of all of us singing together such as Do Ray Me, you can actually hear 11 voices singing. The von Trapp kids would sing quietly or mouth the words and the kids hired just to sing, it would be their voices that would come through."

BET Awards to honor Whitney Houston

WASHINGTON (AP) - Grammy-winner Whitney Houston will be honored at the BET Awards in Las Vegas Tuesday with a tribute led by Christina Aguilera and Luther Vandross. Houston was chosen as the first recipient of Black Entertainment Television's Lifetime Achievement Award because of her many accomplishments in film and music, said Curtis Gadson, a BET spokesman. The 37-year-old singer-actress has won six Grammy Awards. Her films include "The Bodyguard," "Waiting To Exhale" and "The Preacher's Wife." The BET Awards, recognizing excellence in music, film and sports, will be broadcast live at 9 p.m. ET from the Paris Las Vegas Hotel. Steve Harvey and Cedric "the Entertainer" will be the hosts of the two-hour show.

While at the BET Awards, Houston might outsmart People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals when the animal rights group stages a protest against the singer-actress because she's worn fur. PETA announced last week that hundreds of their supporters will take part
in a protest outside the awards show. Houston is reportedly planning on getting even with the protesters by wearing a black, waist-length mink jacket to the show that's been pre-spray painted, according to Monday's New York Post. The paper also reported that the coat is the work of designer Paul Chan, who reportedly dubbed the fur sprayed
with blue, pink, and purple paint the "PETA coat."

Luther's Tribute...

Hotly Anticipated New Luther Vandross Album Out June 19th; Luther Vandross to Honor Whitney Houston On June 19th at BET Awards

NEW YORK (ENTERTAINMENT WIRE) - Grammy-winning R&B icon Luther Vandross, whose career boasts 14 platinum albums, will release his first J Records album entitled Luther Vandross on June 19th. The first single, "Take You Out" is fast becoming a major hit, having debuted on the charts within a record-breaking five days of its release. The "Take You Out" video, co-starring actress Garcelle Beauvais, can now be seen playing on BET.

Alongside the release of his brand new album, Luther will sing his heart out for his longtime friend Whitney Houston at the BET Awards in Las Vegas. In her honor, Luther will sing "All The Woman I Need," a twist on the original Houston song "All the Man I Need." Houston will be awarded the BET Lifetime Achievement Award; Christina Aguilera is also part of the Whitney Tribute. The BET Awards take place at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas on June 19th and airs live.

"I am thrilled to be singing in honor of Whitney Houston. She and I have been friends for years - we both started out singing background for her mother Cissy Houston," comments Luther Vandross. "In fact, Whitney and I have been dying to record a duet together so we hope to make this happen soon."

For the new album, Luther Vandross enlisted the aid of Clive Davis to assemble an all-star team of hot producers and songwriters including; Warryn Campbell; Ron Lawrence; R.L. of Next; Shep Crawford; Harvey Mason Jr. & Damon Thomas; and Soulshock & Karlin. "This is the first album I've ever done like this - working with a lot of the current producers and songwriters," says Vandross. Luther - who has enjoyed six No. 1 R&B singles and four Top 10 pop hits (including the Grammy-winning "Here And Now," "Power of Love/Love Power," "Don't Wanna Be A Fool" and the pop smash "Endless Love" a duet with Mariah Carey).

While delivering a record that brings out a whole new dimension of his talents through his work with some of today's freshest young producers, Luther has also been busy in the studio creating future Vandross classics. In addition to some newly-written material including "Hearts Get Broken All The Time (But The Problem Is, This Time It's Mine)" which he describes as "a very moody hypnotic song" and the mid-tempo "Love Forgot," Luther is planning to cover two '60s songs from the songbook of legendary composer Burt Bacharach. "I produced a couple of songs by myself and as always, I worked with my longtime musical associates Nat Adderly Jr. and Marcus Miller," he notes. "The balance between ballads and uptempo tracks is always important and on this album, we accomplished that..."

PETA Banner
The PETA Banner

Las Vegas - PETA activists bearing a huge banner reading, "WHITNEY: FUR SHAME," will greet vocalist Whitney Houston as she enters the Paris Hotel to accept her Lifetime Achievement Award at the first annual Black Entertainment Television Awards.

The protest follows PETA's recent naming of Houston to its list of worst-dressed celebrities who flaunt fur. The animal rights organization had repeatedly written to the pop singer to share details about the fur industry's routine cruelties to animals and to ask her to abandon fur. Houston never responded.

A PETA video, narrated by top designer Stella McCartney, details undercover investigations of fur farms in Illinois, Indiana, and California and shows fur farmers killing foxes and chinchillas via anal and genital electrocution. Animals suffered exposed broken bones, upper respiratory tract infections, and cancerous tumors without veterinary care. PETA investigators in Maryland found fur farmers killing minks by injecting them with lethal weed-killer. Because fur farmers don't care about humane slaughter-only preserving pelts-they also kill animals via gassing, strangling, and neck-breaking. Trapped animals don't fare much better, often suffering for days and slowly dying of disease, starvation, and thirst before trappers return to stomp on or club them to death.

"It's ironic that Whitney is being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award when she has sentenced so many animals to a cruel death with her wardrobe," says PETA Director Dan Mathews, who is flying in from the group's headquarters in Virginia to lead the protest.

Dionne's Song...

Dionne Warwick Receives Her Award From Whitney Houston

NEW YORK (AP) - The Songwriters Hall of Fame recognizes that songwriters need singers.  So Dionne Warwick is going into the hall even though she didn't write a word of her biggest hits, including "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" and "Walk on By."

Warwick was honored Thursday night - along with singer-songwriters Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton and others - for her distinct ability to turn other people's tunes into classics.

"She's sort of had a whole idea about singing that's very original and no one's ever tried to copy it because I guess it's so unusual, and perfect for those songs," said Elvis Costello, who sang Warwick's hit "Don't Make Me Over" at the 32nd annual ceremony in New York.

The inductees included Clapton, Parton, and Nelson; songwriter Diane Warren, who's written a string of No. 1 tunes; and actor and Oscar-winning composer Paul Williams, who co-wrote songs such as "Evergreen" with Barbra Streisand and penned the Carpenters hit "We've Only Just Begun."

"It's amazing, it's such an honor. It feels amazing for your peers to induct you, and vote you in," said Warren, a Grammy winner and Oscar nominee who wrote Faith Hill's latest hit, "There You'll Be."

Besides receiving the hall of fame honor, Nelson sang one of Williams' other tunes, "Rainbow Connection" - which is also the title track to Nelson's new album. Before the ceremony, Nelson said even though singing made him famous, songwriting is the greater of his talents.

"I'd have to say I was a better songwriter than a singer," he said. "There are some great singers out there that we know about."

Joel, already an inductee, was awarded the Johnny Mercer Award, given to an inductee who has a vast catalog of songs.  "This is a special award for me because it means that my music goes beyond me. It goes to his generation," he said as he stood next to crooner Marc Anthony, who sang Joel's song "An Innocent Man" at the ceremony. "That means a lot to me that his generation is interested in singing my music."

Receiving a lifetime achievement award was singer Gloria Estefan and her producer-husband, Emilio Estefan.  "As a songwriter, this award means a lot to me, because a lot of people don't even know we write the songs," Estefan said.

An emotional Warwick received the Hitmakers award, given specially to singers, from a relative - Whitney Houston.   Houston, who is Warwick's cousin, said "when Dionne sings a song, she owns it. She is a songwriter's dream."

"I am proud to be her fellow artist, but even prouder to be her kin," Houston said.

The ceremony reunited Warwick with composer Hal Davis, the hall's chair. Davis, along with Burt Bacharach, wrote many of Warwick's most popular tunes.  "We all kind of started together, and it just blossomed into what it is today, a very mature, and very strong friendship," Warwick said before the ceremony. "That was the joy with working with both of those men."

Clapton, who has been on tour recently, was not on hand to receive his award.

Eminem Raps On Whitney...

[Launch.com: Eminem & D12 Take Aim At Britney, Whitney & Everlast]

Eminem takes lyrical jabs at a half dozen celebrities on "Ain't Nuttin' But Music," a song on D12's Devil's Night, scheduled to be released June 19. In one verse, Eminem disses Britney Spears, Everlast, Limp Bizkit's DJ Lethal, and Whitney Houston, while entangling NSYNC's Justin Timberlake and actor Ben Affleck in the mix.

In the first verse of the Dr. Dre-produced song, Eminem raps, "This just in/Britney just dissed Justin/She just f--ked Ben/Got t-t f--ked and d--k-sucked him/If Affleck can get his ass licked/How come I can't, sh-t/God damn b--ch/I'm rich/I can't understand this/Are those pictures they made of us together on the internet/The closest I'm ever going to get to hitting it from the back and sh-t/ 'Cause when it comes to that/I hit harder from the back than Everlast when he's plucking Lethal in his f--king ass/Just give me one more chance/Britney hit me one more time/Let me know what's on your mind/Whitney get me one more line to sniff..."

On "Blow My Buzz," D12 member Bizzare takes a shot at civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson, who earlier this year admitted to fathering an illegitimate child via an extramarital affair. In Bizzare's verse, he raps about putting "a date rape drug" in a girl's drink, getting ready to have sex with her, and wraps with, "B--ches I'm catching/Blunts I'm matching/Don't call me Bizarre/I'm the Reverend Jesse Jackson." The album also includes the Limp Bizkit dis "Girls."

"Purple Hills," the first single released from D12's Devil's Night, is Number 16 on Billboard's Rhythmic Top 40 chart.

Vexing vacation for Whitney

POP diva Whitney Houston and her hubby, Bobby Brown, were the victims of a "setup" by a bizarre blonde woman in Florida who accused Brown of having an affair.

Houston and Brown, along with their daughter, Bobbi Kristina, were on vacation at a Williams Island condo this week, and on Monday, the trio visited a pal at the Turnberry Hotel & Resort in Aventura, where they spent most of the day lounging at the club's pool.

Houston and Bobbi Kristina got up to leave and were waiting for Brown in the car when a female club member approached the car on the passenger's side, where Houston's daughter sat, and tapped on the window.

When the window was rolled down, the woman said to a shocked Houston and Bobbi Kristina, "You need to be careful. I don't know how you want to handle this, but your husband is having an affair with one of my friends."

Houston calmly got out and told the stranger, "Just a minute, I want to discuss this - I want you to repeat this to my husband," before leading the woman to a table at the poolside bar.

Houston's lawyer, Martin Singer, said: "Whitney was at all times very calm, and just wanted to discuss this in front of her husband," an account backed up by Houston's publicist, Nancy Seltzer.

When Brown then approached the table, the woman, who had been chatty with Houston up until that point, became agitated, and told Houston, "I am just nervous because I am talking to very important people." The woman started to cry, put her face on the table and covered her head with her hands.

Brown reassured his wife that the woman - who refused to lift her head from the table - was "crazy." Houston left the bar and returned to the car. Witnesses say Brown then demanded of the stranger, "What are you talking about? Why won't you show your face?" An increasingly frustrated Brown ended up dumping a bottle of beer over the woman's head before he left.

Singer declined to discuss Brown's actions but said: "This woman was the one who acted inappropriately. She tried to create a confrontation, and she did it on purpose. You don't make accusations in the presence of a young child."

Seltzer said, "Whitney acted better than anyone else [in the same situation] would act. It was clearly a setup."

According to Seltzer and Singer, the woman is being investigated by the resort, and her membership is under review.

Considering Paula Froelich - she of Atlantic City made up review fame - may have had input into the writing of this story, some of it's content may need to be clarified.  If I find further clarification, it'll be posted here - Manish.

DMX...

[From Yahoo News]

Arizona Desert Is Muse To DMX's Ears
Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Elon Johnson

A rapper's muse is a curious thing. While some MCs have been known to light candles in the studio, watch old TV shows or even indulge in the occasional intoxicant for inspiration, DMX found his inspiration to breathe fire by chillin' in the serenity of Arizona's rattlesnake-inhabited desert.

"It's been a beautiful experience," said producer Dame Grease, who spent a month and a half there recording DMX's fourth LP, tentatively titled The Ears. "We had the most fun ever."

Grease, who laid down 10 tracks for DMX's debut album, It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, is going back to the studio next week — this time in New York — to begin the album's mastering process. According to the producer, DMX is nearly finished with the 14 songs selected for the album, which will also feature production work from Ruff Ryders Swizz Beatz and PK.

DMX's management firm said the rapper who likens himself to a canine will soon see how much love Whitney Houston really has for thugs, as he has reached out to Mrs. Bobby Brown to sing on a song he's dedicating to his late grandmother. Although Houston's label, Arista, couldn't confirm her participation, Grease said '80s R&B queen Stephanie Mills and crooner Jaheim are onboard for the album, singing the hooks of two different songs. Big Stan, who's signed to DMX's Bloodline imprint, will also make an appearance.

"We got some bangin' party joints, but it's an album that's going back to his roots," said Grease, who has four tracks on the album, including "TrinaMoe," which he describes as sounding futuristic and gutter. "It's well-rounded."

DMX's label, Def Jam, said he may be going on tour this summer, but no dates have been confirmed. The Ears is scheduled for a September release.

Bond Story Still Running...

[From Neal Travis' Gossip Column; New York Post]

Whitney Bond?

LOTS happening with sometimes-troubled pop diva Whitney Houston. I hear she's been in talks with producer Barbara Broccolli to sing the score of the next 007 movie and maybe even play a Bond Girl. (Whitney, of course, was huge in "The Bodyguard.")

The article also suggests Whitney and Robin Crawford are looking for recording talent in LA.

Style...

[From People Magazine]

Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown - Proud to Be Loud

True diva style, it might be said, is a dying art. Sure, newbies like Destiny's Child and Christina Aguilera aim for over-the-top flamboyance, but their approach is all flash and flesh--with very little flair.

Clearly they could stand to take notes from the ever eye-popping Whitney Houston. Case in point: the neon purple faux fur Houston paraded at this year's Academy Awards. Houston, 37, likes to look "cool but glamorous," says stylist Patti Wilson, who has worked with both the singer and her husband, R&B artist Bobby Brown, 32. And always, "she's gotta have her heels!" A fan of form-fitting designs by Pamela Dennis and Roberto Cavalli, Houston "has a basic instinct for how she wants to look," adds her cousin, singer Dionne Warwick. As does Brown, who Wilson says conveys a mix of "street and glam." Notes designer Dennis: "They both have great confidence and can pull off something when others cannot."

Piece on Whitney & Bobby appears in the print version of People.
